2021 was a challenging year for Chevrolet. There were sporadic shortages of parts for the range of pickup trucks due to the semiconductor drought. However, things are slowly getting back on track, with the iconic Silverado 1500 receiving impressive engine, body, and trim updates in 2022. We look at what's under the hood and uncover the technology behind the Chevy Silverado 1500 towing capacity.

What Are the 2022 Chevy Silverado Engine Options?

The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado lineup features four engines; a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, two eight-cylinder, naturally aspirated Small Blocks, and a Duramax turbo-diesel. All four versions have improvements that upgrade the Chevy towing capacity from the previous year.

2.7-Liter High-Output Turbocharged 4-Cylinder

The base model's 2.7-Liter I4 L3B turbocharged 4-cylinder engine gets a high-output upgrade that GM estimates gives the vehicle a boost in torque from 348 to 420 lbs. Mated to Chevy's 8-speed automatic transmission, it has a stiffer crankshaft and a more sturdy cylinder block.

5.3-Liter V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management

The Silverado's 5.3-Liter V8 L84 gasoline engine features an Overhead Valve (OHV) design and is part of General Motors' legendary Small Block configuration called EcoTec3. The L84 is GM's smallest V8 engine and has Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) instead of the Active Fuel Management (AFM) on its predecessor, the L83.

6.2-Liter V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management

The 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine is a larger, more powerful variant of the L84. It is paired with the GM 10-speed Hydra-Matic, delivering 420 hp at 5,600 RPM and torque of 460 lbs at 4,100 RPM.

3.0-Liter Duramax® Turbo-Diesel

The Silverado's 3.0L I6 LM2 is a Duramax turbo-diesel engine commonly used in half-ton SUVs and pickup trucks. Nicknamed the "baby Duramax," GM launched the engine as an all-new design in the 2019 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500.
