2022 Chevrolet Silverado RST Engines

While pickup trucks were once considered tools of the trade, defined by their max tow ratings and engine output, today's full-size pickups are often judged by their luxury-grade interiors and technology features. The current Chevy Silverado 1500 isn't nearly as luxurious or tech-savvy as its competitors—the Ford F-150 and Ram—but that will change for the 2022 model year.

LIGHTER IS BETTER

The 2022 Chevy Silverado RST engine uses an aluminum block and cylinder, which reduces the truck’s overall weight. The innovative design of the RST allows weight to be distributed throughout the truck, which leads to an overall better driving experience when you’re behind the wheel. Drivers will be able to feel the difference when it comes to the Silverado’s agility and maneuverability, both on and off the road.

Because the engine utilizes turbocharged technology, it will output increased power, performance, and more efficient fuel economy that is not otherwise possible in a standard engine. The fuel efficiency will be especially important for truck drivers who might otherwise be inclined to search for the largest engine available. The patented turbo I-4 engine combines this turbocharged technology with innovative design and, put simply, outperforms its V6 competitors in every facet.

The key differentiating factors between a V6 engine and the Chevy I-4 Engine, is the orientation of the cylinders; which, for V6 engines, the cylinders are arranged in the shape of a V, whereas the inline-4 (I-4) engine has all four cylinders mounted in a straight line along a single crankshaft and oriented in an inclined or vertical plane.

As the V6 engine churns, the cylinders create a rotating motion, which creates a counter-productive movement to the vehicle’s forward motion. This inefficiency is corrected by I-4 engines, and is the reason they’re called inline engines, because these types of engines are arranged so that all cylinders are firing in the same direction, eliminating the counter-productive rotation effect that v-shaped engines create. This improved inline design allows for smooth and rapid acceleration, which is further enhanced by some of the other features found in the Chevy RST engine.

In the RST engine, Chevy uses a patented, state-of-the-art design that eliminates any delayed acceleration that normally is present in other turbocharged engines in the class. Chevy refers to the specific design feature that comes into play here as an advanced dual-volute turbocharger.

In layman's terms, there are two separate chambers, each with their own gas introduction systems. Other turbo engines in the class often rely on a single chamber that’s shaped like a spiral. Doubling the chambers allows the engine to accelerate much more quickly, as there are twice as many sources of power, so the engine gets what it needs in a hurry to accelerate efficiently.
