There are two great vehicles currently in the marketplace: The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox and the 2019 Ford Edge. Here is what you need to know to make an informed purchase along with our personal recommendation.

Starting Price: $24,795

The Equinox is a fantastic compact SUV that is both comfortable and competent for any driver. Its engine gets up to 39 mpg, so you spend less time at the pump. Two optional engines are available, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is capable of towing 3,500 pounds.

Above Average: Two optional engines for Chevy loyalists looking for a compact SUV including a diesel that gets up to 39 mpg and a 252-horsepower. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Below Average: You have to step up to the top-line trim for active safety features and driver--assistance features like lane departure assist. Competitors offer these for thousands less. No manual transmission offered, either.

Consensus: The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is a compact SUV that offers comfort and competency. Along with an optional diesel engine that gets up to 39 mpg, it’s got a lot to offer.

Starting Price: $30,990

The Ford Edge got a bit of an update in 2019. It has a lot to offer to auto enthusiasts as well as people simply looking for a practical vehicle to drive the family around. While it has a large interior, it lacks in terms of fuel efficiency. It also has a higher price tag than the Chevrolet Equinox.

Above Average: There’s a new sportier variant, the ST, that gives the 2019 Ford Edge a 335-horsepower engine.

Below Average: Not very fuel-efficient and somewhat lower resale value when compared to a Jeep Grand Cherokee or the Subaru Outback.

Consensus: The 2019 Ford Edge gets a revamp for 2019 that gives it both an enthusiast and practical appeal. With a roomy stylish cabin that comfortably seats 5, and styling that makes it stand out in a sea of sameness, it’s a good buy.

The Chevrolet Equinox was updated in 2018 and got a slightly smaller but more upscale look. It is a compact crossover and it’s the only one in the segment that offers a highly efficient optional diesel engine.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard at the base level and there are 3 different engines you can opt for, including the peppy 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. In our drives, the smaller, 1.5-liter engine is more than sufficient. The 2.0-liter engine offers a whole lot more pep even chirping the tires off the line. Inside the 2019 Chevy Equinox, you can comfortably seat 5 people with plenty of space.

The interior space, however, is significantly smaller than the Honda CR-V even with the rear seats down and only offers 63.5 cubic feet. On the other hand, the 2019 Ford Edge gets ample interior space for five and an updated nose that makes it look a bit more, well edgy.

With its wide stance (which can make it tricky to parallel park or park in narrow spots), it is stable and aggressive looking on the street-particularly in the ST version.

The Ford Edge is the first vehicle in the Ford line-up to get the sportier ST variant and it includes a 335-horsepower 2.7-liter V6 engine which gives it 20 more horsepower than the 2018 Sport version.

All-wheel drive comes standard on both including the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower. Ford has added Amazon’s Alexa to the cabin and Android Auto and CarPlay now work with Waze in the new Ford Edge.

Similarities

Compact SUVs with a diverse range of engine options and some good optional equipment.

Chevrolet Equinox Advantages

If you need to tow, or are looking for a very efficient diesel engine, the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is the right bet for you.

Ford Edge Advantages

If you want something that speaks more to your inner auto and tech enthusiast, the 2019 Ford Edge is the right SUV for you.

Final Recommendation

The Chevrolet Equinox is our pick in this head-to-head with its fuel-efficient diesel and towing prowess. While the Ford Edge certainly takes the cake in the sportiness and tech arena, the price makes it a bit less appealing.
