2018 Chevy Volt vs Nissan Leaf

When searching for a superior electric car, buyers are often faced with the Chevrolet Volt vs. Nissan Leaf. Both cars offer drivers an environmentally friendly, smooth ride, but this is where the similarities end. In every category, the 2018 Chevrolet Volt comes out ahead.

The Volt is a hybrid car with an incredibly short charging time and an impressive range between fuel fill-ups. It was also the winner of the 2018 IIHS top safety pick award, so you can rest assured that it will keep you and your family safe.

WHAT’S NEW

For 2018, Chevrolet added exciting new features to the Volt’s standard package as well as several optional features for both trim levels. A major redesign in 2016 gave the Volt a new powertrain and chassis as well, which are still popular among buyers today.

The newer Leaf improves on a few complaints from older models, mainly its exterior design and technological features, hoping to appeal to a wider audience than its pod-like predecessor. However, it still doesn’t offer anything truly unique – making it difficult to win car buyers over.

THE EXTERIOR

The Volt has a stunning exterior that features subtle curves, a wide stance, and sleek design. Buyers can also choose from two trim levels and eight available eye-catching shades. Most hybrid and electric cars adapt style choices far from the conventional car designs buyers want. 2016’s redesign gave the Volt a more conventional appearance, which attracted more buyers.

The 2018 Nissan Leaf exterior has been redesigned for this model, but it is still a far cry from the slick look of the Volt. Designers have tried to make it more appealing for a wider audience, but it still has some ways to go before garnering widespread attraction.

PERFORMANCE

Buyers looking for a powerful hybrid should test drive the Volt today. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 in a mere 8.4 seconds. The car has a 53-mile battery range, with an expected 420 miles of total range. Drivers can also enjoy incredible fuel economy, with 1,100 miles between fill-ups.

While there is improved power with the Leaf, the 0 to 60 time is a full second slower. Additionally, the new Leaf can only travel for about 150 miles on a single charge, which is far from the 420 miles offered by the Volt.

SAFETY

When it comes to safety, only the Volt received the 2018 Top Safety Pick Award from IIHS. Among its many safety features, the Volt includes Teen Driver technology, advanced navigation features, lane departure warning, 10 airbags, and automatic OnStar crash response.
The Leaf does have a few notable safety features but lacks the ones drivers most frequently seek, such as lane departure warnings and parking assistance. Much like the Volt, all trims also contain automatic emergency braking.
