THE CHEVY CRUZE ADVANTAGE

Today’s small sedans do it all, combining the elegance, comfort, and performance of mid-size vehicles with the fuel economy and “fun to drive” element of smaller offerings. Two of the best in class are the 2017 Chevy Cruze and the 2017 Toyota Corolla.

The Cruze has been picking up good reviews, especially for its advanced set of safety features and updated styling. And with a base price of $16,975, it is a great value and almost $2,000 less than the Corolla’s base price.

Let’s compare the 2017 Chevy Cruze to the Toyota Corolla head-to-head in several categories to see which one is the best choice.

THE EXTERIOR

The Cruze received an updated design in 2016. The sleek, wedge-shaped profile of the redesigned Cruze gives it a crisper, more modern look. The many angles, curves and accent lines all work very well together to give the car a stylish and superior appeal.

The Corolla was last redesigned in 2012, and back then it was given a more daring, edgy look. Unfortunately, it’s 2017 and that look is now a little dated. Also, the Corolla is only available in 10 colors while the Cruze is available in 13.

THE INTERIOR

The Cruze offers plenty of room for front passengers, with more usable space in the rear seat than in previous years. It is rather large and spacious for the class when you consider its bolstered, front-bucket seats and expansive rear-seat legroom.

In comparison to the Cruze, the Corolla offers minimal legroom and storage space. The Corolla’s interior also contains cheap plastics and glossy paint that make it feel a bit tacky, while the Cruze features appealing and comfortable cloth seats.

THE TECHNOLOGY

The Cruze scores big on technology with a seven-inch touchscreen interface featuring Chevy’s MyLink, Bluetooth, full power accessories and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and navigation. It also offers advanced smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which the Corolla does not have.

The Corolla’s touchscreen interface is only 6.1 inches – making it almost an inch smaller than the Cruze’s. When comparing the infotainment systems, it’s also noticeable that the Corolla’s interface is overcrowded and reacts slower than the Cruze’s.

SAFETY FIRST

The Cruze offers a great selection of available active safety systems, including a rear-view camera, lane keeping assist, and forward collision warning. And unlike the Corolla, the Cruze has a blind spot monitor and rear parking sensors.

When it comes to NHTSA crash test ratings, the Cruze outperforms the Corolla in several categories – including Overall, Front Crash Overall, and Front Crash Passenger. The Cruze’s superior ratings may be a result of its rear side airbags, which do not come standard in the Corolla.
